Where People Matter

Meet Satya! The man behind Aamir Khan’s robust well-knit body in 2008 blockbuster Ghajini and Hrithik Roshan’s sculpted biceps in Agneepath. Since, last 30 years, Satya has been instrumental in transforming the looks of many Bollywood celebrities like Ajay Devgn, Saif Ali Khan, Esha Deol, Rani Mukerji, and  Zayed Khan.

I had first met Satya in the year 2008. He was in Delhi, accompanied by Ajay Devgn and his entourage for the launch of his gym franchise – Barbarian Power Gym. Ever so humble and polite, Satya is that bald guy who has the best knowledge of fitness. His idea of wellness comes straight from your grandmothers’ book of wisdom. This weekend, we sat down ‘two-feet-apart’ wearing our masks, to discuss the basics of weight loss, good health, happiness, and success. Do scroll down till the end, for a 10-minute workout suggested by Satya.

Satya with Hrithik Roshan

Me: You have been in the fitness industry for more than three decades. How have you seen the industry evolve? Especially, with newer forms of workouts like Murph, Pilates, Tabata… becoming a rage every now and then.

Satya: All the new forms of training are good. But the basic principle remains the same and that is, you should sweat at least once a day. That sweat can actually make you and your health sparkle. It is important to flush out toxins from your body. Secondly, every part of your body should be engaged in training. Fat starts accumulating in various pockets of our bodies. These fat deposits start becoming denser if not busted in time.

Me: If you had to simplify fitness for us how would it be?

Satya: Fitness is the key to success. All those people who are at the top of their career, are the most cautious about their health. And there can never be a better time than now, to realise it. In the last year, I have been training people online, from all across the world. People are more cautious than ever. Maybe, the last year made us realise the real wealth is a healthy, and fit body. To my surprise, virtual training has been extremely impactful. I am training more people than ever. We are seeing results because the commitment levels are higher than ever. All my clients sign off by saying.. mazaa agaya Satya Bhai! They are feeling much better, toned, and more confident about themselves.

Me: Okay so what is the real problem?

Satya: The problem starts when we eat more calories than our body can burn. The portion sizes are bigger now. We are eating more junk thanks to easier online deliveries. Slowly, fat starts accumulating here & there in our bodies. The metabolism goes for a toss. Lethargy starts setting in. We stop feeling good about ourselves. It is a vicious cycle.

Me: So what should be diet like?

Satya: I always say, no two bodies are same ever. Even the same diet and workout plan will have a different impact on a male, than a female body. However, there are certain rules which can be followed to achieve desired results. To begin with, cutting down on gluten, sugar and dairy can really help. Fried food should be a complete ‘no’. We Indians don’t realise that the moment oil is heated, its chemical formula changes. It toughens up and becomes very difficult to assimilate. I recommend using coconut oil. At a lower temperature, it is like an elixir for your body.

Me: How come all sudden wheat and sugar are such enemies? Considering, that we Indians have grown up eating wheat in our staple diet?

Satya: I also ask myself this question. And the answer is… because we have forgotten the right way to eat it. Two chapatis anybody can eat. It can not harm. But the problem happens when the same wheat is eaten in big portions and at the wrong time.  Also, with remote control life, our basic movement is lesser than ever. So, to cleanse your system of that damage, it is important to set a goal. And to achieve that goal, one will have to abstain from gluten.  Once the desired weight and health is achieved, these can be started again, but in prescribed portions. Our body functions best when it gets all its nutrients in the right moderation. However, white sugar should not be consumed in any manner. Jaggery and palm sugar can be better options for sweeteners.

Me: Suggest us some quick tips for maintaining daily health.

Satya:  Make sure to engage yourself in a full-body workout. And that too in a ventilated space. Not in an air condition room. Do Surya Namaskar, preferably, every morning between 7.30 am to 8.30 am. This will take care of your metabolism and Vit D levels. We can take cues from animals. As soon as the Sun comes out animals make sure to stay out and about.

His idea of fitness definitely makes sense to me. Before we sign off, here’s a HIT workout for all you busy peeps out there.
